Many
have sought a place where they would be accepted, a place they can call home, a
community that would help them do and be better and that’s the church.
What
does the church mean to you and are there certain qualifications to be a member
of the church?
Some
years ago, while on campus. I was talking with a friend, when he asked me, why
does your fellowship welcome sinners? The question took me aback for a very
long while but I’m glad my friend listened to what I had to say and I pray it
blesses you also.
The
church is a place where people come to experience fellowship, where the broken
gets fixed, where salvation is gotten, where people get to meet the man on the
cross.
When
people come to church, they’re not looking for the rules and regulations that
make up religion. They’re looking for God, they’re in search of love and that’s
the greatest encounter ever – the encounter of God (love)!
The
church is the body of Christ (with Christ being the head) and every part of
this body is indispensable. One Christian cannot form the Church, the Church is
a community of Christians (1 Corinthians 12:14-23).
One
of God’s intentions for the church is that those who love and seek Him get to
fellowship together, care for one another, uplift themselves, share each other
experiences and be each other’s support system (1 Corinthians 12:25).
My
friend had secluded himself from some other members of the church; he had
judged them sinners, from the traits he could see. He counted himself a
Christian deserving of being a member of the Church but not them.
That was absolutely a wrong perception
of the Church; the church isn’t meant for “Perfect Christians”. You become a
member of the Church when you allow Jesus Christ Lord over you (be the head of
your life).
When you accept Christ’s supreme
lordship, you’re then being transformed to become a perfect reflection of Him
daily. The Christian’s growth is continuous. When you accept Christ, you don’t
become like Him in one day but rather, you’re given the ability to become like
Him. The shaping and conversion into His perfect image are dependent on you;
and that beloved, is the essence of the Church, to help you become Christ-like
in every ramification.
Just like Jesus did, you must learn how
to rebuke sin and love sinners. It is possible to hate sin and still bring
sinners to the light and the most effective way to do this is through love.
“We show the world Jesus, by
walking in His love.”
Jesus told the Pharisees who when they
saw him eating with the publicans and sinners asked His disciples, why does
your master eat with such class of people?
He simply said; “they that are whole (perfect)
need not a physician, but they that are sick. Matthew 9:11-12.” – Jesus didn’t come for the
righteous, He came for the imperfect!
A very flawed ideology that has crippled
the fellowship amongst brethren in the church is the belief that ‘I am better
than the other’, the failure to acknowledge one’s own flaws and weaknesses!
Lots of believers struggle with different factors and because of this flawed
mentality; they deny the church its power to transform their lives.
We are meant to become better Christians
by fellowshipping with other believers. The Church is the best place we can get
all the assistance and help needed to be shaped like Christ.
There
is no one who’s immune to temptation. When placed in a difficult situation, you
and I are capable of any sin (1 Corinthians
10:12). God knows this! And that’s why He has assigned us, the
responsibility of keeping each other on track.
The
Church is a family far more important than your earthly family. It’s a family
meant to be concerned about your spiritual growth, your life as a whole even!
There’s no such thing as ‘minding one’s business’ in the body of Christ. When
something is wrong with a member of the body, then something is wrong with the
entire body (1 Corinthians 12:26). It
is thus, the duty of all members to help that part get better. You don’t help
that member by shying away from him/her or by driving him/her away with murmurs
and insults neither do you help them by making them feel unchurched but by
reaching out, praying for them and actually helping them out of that phase (Hebrews 3:13).
Beloved,
don’t be like brother Diotrephes, who refused to welcome members and puts them
out of the church (3 John 1:9-10). Rather,
help them grow, don’t leave them hanging.
You
don’t throw the dirty water in the bath with the baby? You remove the baby and throw the dirty water.
James
5:16
tells us to “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye
may be healed.” That’s exactly the essence of the church!
I beseech you to make the decision
today, to be your brothers’ and sisters’ keeper, to correct them in love and to
help them walk in the light of the Father.
And I pray that as you do that, the good
lord continuously shapes you to become a perfect reflection of Him.
God bless you immensely!

Talk
about a young man who never knew what God has in store for him; talk about
Tsalla Emmanuel. Entering into a relationship with God has been and is my
testimony to eternity.
Growing up a church-boy, I never really saw beyond what I was told or casually read of who God is. There was no real relationship between me and God! Of course, I knew He did exist and was my heavenly Father, but the question ‘Do you know God?’ was something I had not come to fully grasp.
The question properly dawned on me when
I made it to the university.
You’d agree with me that the freshman year on campus is indeed overwhelming, that was me in 2014, I found myself at the crossroads of life, I was on the fence, hadn’t taken a decision as to what sort of lifestyle I was going to live.
I had attended at least two parties
already, was a fellowship attendant though not completely sold out to the
kingdom, had a mixture of friends from both worlds and wasn’t pretty sure where
I was headed. That was the dilemma I was faced with and this continued till my
second year.
I had prioritized my academics above all other things and was really focused on my studies, yet, things weren’t balanced for me. I started engaging in fellowship activities though not fully committed as I suffered the influences of wrong association, being a very young man faced with such divided attention, I was headed for destruction unknowingly but something strange happened along the way.
In the year 2015, I was nominated to
serve as a fellowship executive, yeah! I was still that church-boy who didn’t
know he had much to learn. Puzzled by this development, I couldn’t help but
wonder if it was maybe due to insufficient capable hands that a mild little
fella like me was called to serve. It was a mystery I couldn’t unravel at that
point, I couldn’t afford being embarrassed due to my poor knowledge of God
while in office, so I tried evading the screening process as a means of
automatically disqualifying myself but a friend tricked me right into the
interviewing centre.
While I sat facing the interviewers, I kept asking myself ‘what I had gotten into?’ I came to the conclusion that they’d see me for who I really was and definitely refute any thought of considering me as a church leader. I gave countless reasons why I couldn’t serve, that I wasn’t sure God had called me, I was also very young, had a poor relationship with God, and that I had never served in any such capacity before. However, there was something the interviewers saw in me, I had not come to see in myself.
Same evening was the elections, you bet I wasn’t there, I had decided to spend the evening in class. While I was headed back home after the prep, I met one of the leaders who approached me and the words that came out of his mouth left me bemused.
Congratulations for what sir? was my
response, he told me I had been elected as a fellowship executive, to my utter bewilderment,
he went further to say I was elected with over 100 votes.
I was taken aback and left totally dumbfounded.
Whaaat! How possible could this be? I rarely attended fellowship services, I could swear the members never knew me, and to worsen it even, I wasn’t there for the elections. The news left me in absolute stupefaction, to say the least.
I had no real relationship with God, and so running to Him never crossed my mind. Probably, I had mentioned it in my so-called ‘prayers’, but wasn’t really intentional about it. Being overwhelmed, I found myself at home consulting my parents and my pastor who all advised me to serve, so I decided to give it a shot.
God had picked a man that had not found
Him or himself, skipped laid down protocols for an inconsequential being who
never deserved it, all these to what end?
Knowing full well I needed beyond the
little knowledge I had gathered of God, I was driven to know Him better, this
was the turning point in my life because I knew in my heart that I could not
impart that which I did not possess. Albeit my drive as at then was for the
wrong purposes, it didn’t take too long for my understanding to become
enlightened and a fresh true motive born.
I got to realize that God reveals
Himself to those who diligently seek Him, and my worship to Him needed to be in
truth and in spirit. So, I started seeking God genuinely, an undeniable hunger
for Him was quickened in my heart and that gave room for different amazing
encounters.
I must admit, I’ve encountered lots of stumbling blocks in my Christian race thus far, but when I think of the glory of it all, I’m only encouraged to run farther.
I never would have thought I’d accomplish these much at such a young age, being aligned to my maker has brought me nothing but life’s satisfaction, this formerly lost boy is today a great inspirational speaker and writer, has led a large fellowship of believers on campus, became a director of a faith-based non-governmental organization burdened with the responsibility of transforming poor and impoverished lives in the world, a Christian blogger with hundreds of viewers, a mentor to many, to name just a few.
God has shaped my life to be a conduit
pipe for bringing others to the realization of their full potentials. All these
and lots of others I was able to achieve through the help of God, all I needed
to do was accept Him as Lord over my life and submit to His will. The
revelations God has shown me concerning my life are beyond my imaginations or
expectations, there are greater heights I am yet to behold and the deeper I go
with Him, the wider the scope of my purpose becomes. Having a relationship with
God has truly moulded my life for the better and has brought to me peace. “For
He, LORD, gives perfect peace to those
who keep their purpose firm and put their trust in you”. Isaiah 26:3
The world today has misconceived the purpose of life in its entirety, the very essence of life is not the accumulation of earthly possessions or the attainment of a certain pedestal that satisfies humans’ standards but the fulfilment of purpose and the full release of potential, however, this can only be ascertained when divinity communes with humanity.
“It’s in Christ that we find out
who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and
got our hopes up, he had his eyes on us, had designs on us for glorious living”
Everything got started in God and finds
its purpose in Him.
There’s already a master-plan by the Master Planner for your life, all that’s required of you is to know the blueprint and until you know who holds it, you can’t access it.
Pastor Rick Warren in his book titled
“The Purpose Driven Life” starts his first chapter with these remarkable
insights;
“The purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfilment, your peace of mind, or even your happiness, it’s far greater than your family, your career, or even your wildest dreams and ambitions. If you want to know why you were placed on this planet, you must begin with God. You were born by his purpose and for his purpose.”
The question “What on earth am I here
for?’ is one that can only be answered in the place of communion with God,
that’s where we get to see our thumbnail sketch.
Millions of people have failed in this
pursuit by allowing certain factors deter them, for some, it was life’s denial
(they saw themselves as mistakes/accidents), for others, it was pride, trials
and tribulations to name just a few.
The devil has swayed the minds of many
from God’s true plans for their lives, they’ve allowed the circumstances of
their birth, the opinions of others, the struggles they face and other factors
define them.
There are no accidents with God, the
fact that your parents didn’t plan you doesn’t mean God didn’t plan you, He has
never and would never consider you as a mistake, you’re His perfect creation,
so beautiful in His sight. He’s not concerned about the world’s opinion about
you, what matters is His thoughts and plans for you. “For I know the plans I have for
you, declares the LORD, plans for wholeness and not for evil, to give you a
future and a hope.” Jer 29:11
He knew everything about you and the circumstances that would surround you. Before you were formed you in the belly, He already knew you.
Another factor that has hindered many, is the storms they encounter along the way. They allowed trials and tribulations hinder them from having a relationship with the Father, the mirage the enemy creates in our hearts most times is that we’re all by ourselves in such trying moments and then keeps us more focused on our problems and pains than the presence of our Father.
Here is an insight to digest on, the
psalmist in Psalms 66 enjoins the Israelites to bless God, the God which holds
their soul in life and suffers not their feet to be moved. Now here’s the more
interesting part, verse 10, “For thou, o God, hast proved us: thou hast
tried us, as silver is tried” David understood the trying phases and
its purposes, he got to find out God’s intentions for his people beyond their
temporal pains. Journey further with me to verse 11 and 12, “Thou hast caused men to ride
over our heads; we went through fire and water: but thou brought us out into a
wealthy place.”
Try creating a mental picture of some of
the trials the Israelites had encountered, then revert back to his last
statement again “But thou brought us out into a wealthy place” What is your
present situation reading? God is telling you, notwithstanding what it may be,
my plan is to bring you out into a wealthy place and believe me, it supersedes
the pains you had to go through.
Now, let’s juxtapose Psalm 66:10 and
Malachi 3:3
“He’ll take his place as a refiner of silver, as a cleanser of dirty clothes. He’ll scrub the Levite priests (replace the Levite priests with your own name) clean, refine them like gold and silver, until they’re fit for God, fit to present offerings of righteousness”
I was privileged to read the story of a
group of women having a bible study in relation to this verse. When they came
across the scripture, they kept pondering over it, what it meant about the
character and nature of God. One of the women offered to find out the process
of refining silver and get back to the group at the next Bible study. That
week, this women called up a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him
at work. She didn’t mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond
her curiosity about the process of refining silver. As she watched over the
fire and let it heat up, he explained that in refining silver, one needed to
hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were the hottest as
to burn away all impurities. The woman thought about God holding us in such a
hot spot then she thought again about the verse, that “He sits as a refiner and
purifier of silver.” She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to
sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The
man answered saying, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he
had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire, if the
silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.
The woman was silent for a moment. Then
she asked the silversmith, “How do you know when the silver is fully refined?
He smiled at her and answered, “Oh, that’s easy – when I see my image in it.”
Oh, what a father is He!
Beloved, at every time in the storm,
every moment we tagged as bad, He was right there with us, notwithstanding the
hotness of the flames, He remained at the centre of it all.
Try to picture the pains Jesus went
through for our sake and then place the Father with Him, seeing everything His
son had to go through!
God would never let His children go through difficult times except there’s a crown to be worn at the end. The glory or result of it outweighs the processes of it, 2 Corinthians 4:17 tells us “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving to us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”
When life seems not to be making sense to you, rather than giving in to the enemy and his deceitful whispers trust God. Remember, Joseph saw a great vision for his life but it didn’t begin to manifest immediately. He was first of all criticized and envied by his siblings, sold into slavery at an early age, and was later thrown and forgotten in a cell for a crime he didn’t commit. Poor Joseph, after all these trials, should have given up on a bright future, but no! Instead, he made persistence, commitment, loyalty and fidelity his watchword and what was his end result? God’s revealed plans for his life were made manifest at long last. There’s light at the end of the tunnel friends. The dark moments, the trying times and testing in the burning flames are for the master to get His perfect image out of us.
“Can a woman forget her sucking
child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they
may forget, yet I will not forget thee. Behold I have graven thee upon the
palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me” Isaiah 49:15-16.
Beloved, our stories mustn’t be the same before God would walk with you, you don’t necessarily have to be a church or fellowship leader before you accept His call. He is interested in you just the way you are, not a little bit taller or slimmer, He’s got no interest in what you’ve achieved thus far or not, neither would He consider all your wrong deeds before He welcomes you home.
God is calling out to you today, to embark on life’s journey with Him with the promise that He would take care of you. All He seeks from you is a genuine, submissive and sincere heart of love for Him.
Don’t be frightened if you’re yet to begin with Him, the most important thing is to ensure you finish with Him.
God wants you!!!
Prayers!
Heavenly
Father, praise be to Your Holy Name, thank You for Your words and thank You for
being a Father to me. Lord, I’ve heard your call upon my life and I make the
decision today, to walk with You in accordance with your purpose for my life.
Thank you Lord for accepting me. This I ask through Christ Jesus, my Lord and
saviour. Amen.

Hey
there! I hope the topic hasn’t swayed your mind into so many misconceptions?
I
implore you to commit your mind to this article and I pray that the eyes of
your understanding shall be enlightened. Amen!
The Plough!
The
natural conception of the word ‘plough’ is that it is a piece of farming
equipment used for turning over the soil before putting seeds into it.
Let’s
have a look at what Jesus says about the plough, precisely in Luke 9:62
“And
Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back
is fit for the Kingdom of God”
KJV.
Jesus
said ‘no
man, having put’, that means the hands weren’t there before and it is
very important for you to know that the use of the words ‘having put’ does not suggest
its compulsion. Also, from the preceding verses, you’d find that Jesus had
asked different men to follow Him but He didn’t force them to, this is
analogous to when Jesus selected His twelve Disciples. This succinctly shows
that man has absolute volition in putting his hands on the plough or responding
to God’s call. There’s room for one’s will!
Jesus didn’t stop there, however, let’s
look at the other part of verse 62 of the same chapter ‘and looking back, is fit for the
Kingdom of God’
So it is one thing to put your hands on
the plough and another to look back!
As a believer, you would definitely go
through austere times, causing you to want to look back in your journey. Tough
storms and trials meant to test your faith and conviction.
The enemy would definitely give you reasons to look back and give up on the one true course; reasons to return to your former lifestyle; causing you doubts and indecisions whether you want to go forward in your journey. The devil could come through family, friends, mentors, teachers, etc. but just as Jesus addressed Peter in Matthew 16:23, not because Peter was the devil but because peter had sided with the devil, so are we expected put the distractions behind us.
Just
as Todd Dulaney sang, “It may not be
easy, but Lord, I keep running to you, sometimes, I get weary but I know that
you’re pulling me through”. You would get weary at different points in your
Christian journey. Notice, the lyrics didn’t say ‘‘I might get weary, rather it
says sometimes I get’’ Todd knows, that those times will definitely come but
that doesn’t stop him, however, from continuing the race.
Another
version translated Luke 9:62 thus; “But Jesus told him, anyone who lets himself
to be distracted from the work I plan for him is not fit for the Kingdom of
God.”
The
plough symbolizes ‘The Great Commission’ or as some would call it ‘The Christian’s
Work’,– establishing God’s Kingdom and sovereignty over the earth, turning over
lives (just as the plough turns over the soil) and planting Jesus (the most
vital seed) in them.
The
distraction referred to in Luke 9:62 that led to Jesus’ response was family,
yes! the important unit called ‘family’. The man Jesus asked to follow Him
wanted to go home to bid his family farewell, and probably ask for their
permission. Just like the man Jesus gave this response to, we sometimes find
ourselves in such dilemmas where other things are seeking first place in our
lives over Kingdom work.
Do
not allow such earthly factors serve as constraints or hindrances to you and to
your Kingdom work when you are at such crossroads; do not succumb to the
desires of the earth by allowing temporary crowns distract you from the
ultimate crown.
Jesus
addressed this in so many occasions and even in the parables He shared:
-
Take a look at the supposed disciple,
who wanted to bury His father first before accepting the call (Luke 9:59).
-
The story of the Ten Bridesmaid? Where
five of the bridesmaid forgot to fill their lamps with oil (Matt: 25).
-
There’s also the parable of the seeds
that fell among the thorns. The seeds would have thrived well but they let the
attractions of this world, the delights of wealth, the search for success and
the lure of nice things (these are some of the thorns Jesus referred to) come
in and crowd out the place of God in their hearts (Mark 4:7,18).
-
Also the man in Luke 9:57, that asserted
he would follow Jesus, no matter where He goes, but when Jesus told him of the
real state of affairs, he quickly backed out.
-
Even the man that needed to bury his dad
was told that the course he wanted to ride on was subservient to our duty on
earth (Luke 9:59).
There
would definitely be at every time, arrays of reasons, issues or causes trying
to weigh you down from seeing the one true course. We’re always going to be
faced with hurdles to jump but the moment you give in and turn back, you lose
it all. The right way is full of many hitches and potholes, it would test you
at different junctions, it would in fact, put you on trial but never forget,
the cross is what leads to the crown and the crown is what matters the most.
The Bible tells us in Hebrews 12:1b to “lay aside every weight, and the sin
which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race
that is set before us”.
Don’t
be like the men Jesus called but gave one or two excuses and were thus, not
selected. The Bible tells us that “many are called but few are chosen”, the
call is being made to millions of lives every day but not everyone sees beyond
the cross, all they see is a reason not to work.
Apostle
Paul explaining this, likened our race to the normal race, here is what he
said; “You know that only one person gets a prize for being in a race even if
many people run. You must run so you will win the prize. Everyone who runs in a
race does many things so his body would be strong. He does it to get a prize
that will soon be worth nothing, but we work for a prize that will last
forever. In the same way, I run straight for the place at the end of the race.
I fight to win. I do not beat the air” 1 Corinthians 9:24-26 NLV.
So
many people run races that are not worth the course, and they do so many things
to their body in order to win. We Christians have a good course to run for, one
worth the race, it is a prize that lasts forever. I urge you to run, run and
run without looking back, for what shall it profit a man, to gain the whole
world but lose his soul?
The
pathway to the crown isn’t rosy. However, it is the only satisfactory path. It
carries the water that quenches every thirst and as long as you journey in that
path, this water flows in you. It is the only pathway that guarantees the
fulfilment of life’s purposes. I can’t help but wonder how Apostle Paul felt,
when he expressed his feelings thus “I have fought the good fight, I have
finished my course, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7)
Beloved,
there’s great joy and satisfaction when you know your time on earth wasn’t a
waste.
The
plough also relates to other spheres of our lives.
There
are people who’ve reverted back on a life changing decision, it could be a
business venture, academic pursuit, marital relationships, friendships, dream
jobs, etc. They allowed the devil to deceive them into falling back to the
startup line.
There
are those who have allowed themselves to be driven by failures, they don’t
realize that failure is nothing but life telling them to employ a different
strategy. We only truly fail when we stop trying!
The
setbacks we experience are stepping stones to greater heights, it arouses the
need to do better and be better. The lemons are not to make you feel bitter but
rather for you to squeeze out the lemonades from it, it can be better!
Don’t let the allurements or the
tribulations of the world distract you. If your relationship is failing, don’t
run from it, make it work! When the work gets frustrating, don’t just quit, but
rather look for ways to make it better. When you are on the sinking end of a
pendulum, don’t give in and jump into the waters, call for help. When all hope
seems lost and it looks like you’re all alone, please don’t succumb to the
belief that He’s not there for you are never alone. Remember God has promised
that He won’t leave you, neither would He forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).
“I have made you and I will carry you, I will sustain you and I will rescue you” (Isaiah 46:4)
His
plans are always beautiful than your disappointments, “For our light and momentary
troubles are achieving to us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all” (2
Cor 4:17) NIV.
The
Lord has made everything out of nothing, trust Him, He will take care of you.
Todd Dulaney’s song didn’t just stop at, sometimes I get weary, the lyrics
continued with “but I know that you’re pulling me through.”
Beloved,
God knows your plight, He knows the cry of your heart, David wasn’t a man after
God’s own heart because he was perfect but because he always kept running. It
is not the fall that matters but the ability to get back to your feet again,
the setbacks would come in their numbers, but always remember that you have the
ability to kick back, so kickback!
God
asked us, “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on
the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See I
have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me” (Isaiah
49:25) NIV
I urge you to put your hands on the plough and
don’t look back!
Prayers!
Father
thank you for giving me this great privilege to work in your vineyard, I thank
you for your call upon my life. I ask for the grace to remain steadfast to the
one true course, help me Lord to reach the end by completing my race and fulfilling
purpose. I bless your holy name, thank you for hearing me Lord, I ask this
through Jesus Christ my Lord and Saviour. Amen
God
bless you, Amen.
